The Austrian Media Library – Historical films online!
The Austrian Media Library (Österreichische Mediathek) is preserving about 550,000 recordings and videos of different formats, mainly shellac records, vinyl records, audio cassettes, CDs, video cassettes and DVDs. In total, more than two million individual recordings are available. The entire (digitised) collection is accessible via the website of the Austrian Media Library.
The topics that are covered are manifold and include:
Making candles (dipping), baking and cooking various traditional recipes, tying headscarves, traditional mourning dress of Bregenzerwald women, mourning traditions in Vorarlberg, traffic in Vienna, the “Türkenpfeifer” in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, an Upper-Austrian Landler from Lambach in the Traunviertel region, carnival traditions in Austria, making ox pizzles, straw hats, jaw harps or pocket knives, horse shoeing and stonemasonry, old children’s games, making cheese, driving down cattle from the mountain pastures, and much more.
