Introduction
For the family historian the ecclesiastical and manorial/seignorial records are two of the most
important sources. However, the inexperienced researcher soon finds himself / herself
confronted with various difficulties: the ever changing scripts over the centuries, which in the
last 100 years are no longer in use, and the peculiar church Latin and special expression which
complicate the speedy progress of any research. The more one engages into the lives of
ancestors, it becomes quickly apparent that it is almost impossible to decode the language
without the help of experts or other tools.
Many definitions of professions, diseases, conditions of kinship and localities have changed
over the centuries; most of these expressions are no longer in use. Latin, then the language of
the clergy, is banned in our schools today. Localities also have changed because of formations
of new borders and states.
This list of terms and definitions is not complete! However, this dictionary should help the
researcher to translate the original scripts, guide him / her to further entries in various books,
and herewith facilitate the building of a comprehensive family tree.
Naturally, not all terminology can be listed in this work. It is also important to point to the
fact that some of the definitions from the historic Central Europe can only with difficulty be
translated into English. But the more than 2000 expressions should be sufficient for the novice
researcher and hobbyist alike. Many of the terms and definitions listed are typically Austrian;
but some of the vocabulary (like Chalupner, podsedek, Gärtler, etc.) also comes from the
countries of the former Austrian Monarchy. To add to the list of vocabularies or to point out
any error would be greatly appreciated.

Introduction
For the family historian the ecclesiastical and manorial/seignorial records are two of the most
important sources. However, the inexperienced researcher soon finds himself / herself
confronted with various difficulties: the ever changing scripts over the centuries, which in the
last 100 years are no longer in use, and the peculiar church Latin and special expression which
complicate the speedy progress of any research. The more one engages into the lives of
ancestors, it becomes quickly apparent that it is almost impossible to decode the language
without the help of experts or other tools.
Many definitions of professions, diseases, conditions of kinship and localities have changed
over the centuries; most of these expressions are no longer in use. Latin, then the language of
the clergy, is banned in our schools today. Localities also have changed because of formations
of new borders and states.
This list of terms and definitions is not complete! However, this dictionary should help the
researcher to translate the original scripts, guide him / her to further entries in various books,
and herewith facilitate the building of a comprehensive family tree.
Naturally, not all terminology can be listed in this work. It is also important to point to the
fact that some of the definitions from the historic Central Europe can only with difficulty be
translated into English. But the more than 2000 expressions should be sufficient for the novice
researcher and hobbyist alike. Many of the terms and definitions listed are typically Austrian;
but some of the vocabulary (like Chalupner, podsedek, Gärtler, etc.) also comes from the
countries of the former Austrian Monarchy. To add to the list of vocabularies or to point out
any error would be greatly appreciated.
